My Artistic Journey:

From Romania to the United Arab Emirates, Through Painting, Emotion, and Connection

I am Carmen Olteanu, a painter, Doctor in Fine and Decorative Arts, and a graduate of the National University of Arts in Bucharest, Painting Department. My art is a mirror of my sensitivity, my inner explorations, and the echoes I perceive from the world around me. Each artwork is a confession, a moment suspended in time, a fragment extracted from the whirlwind of life and reshaped through deep emotion.

My artistic journey has not only been a professional evolution but also an inner transformation. From my early works inspired by figurative realism and portraiture to my exploration of themes related to identity, technology, and humanity, my path has intersected with places, cultures, and experiences that have shaped my vision.

From Bucharest to Abu Dhabi: A New Artistic Horizon

Romania is where I built my artistic identity, where I learned to read emotions beyond facial expressions and to seek truths hidden beneath appearances. My art has never been about reproducing reality but about filtering and reshaping it through sensitivity and introspection.

Moving to the United Arab Emirates was a profound shift that also influenced my creative process. In Abu Dhabi, I discovered a fascinating contrast between tradition and modernity, between the silence of the desert and the vibrancy of the city, between the past and the future. These contrasts have become a source of inspiration, reflecting in my compositions and the themes I explore. The Arab culture, with its geometric symbolism, rich color palette, and deep spirituality, has subtly infiltrated my works, creating a dialogue between spaces, times, and emotions.

About My Work: An Art of Introspection and Connection

At the core of my creations lies HUMANITY, with all its emotions, vulnerabilities, and contradictions. My portraits are not mere representations but attempts to capture the inner essence of the subjects, beyond their visible shell. I enjoy exploring the boundary between reality and imagination, between what is seen and what cannot be seen but can be felt.

Many of my works conceal multiple layers beneath their final version—traces of past iterations, moments of hesitation and revelation, alternative paths I could have taken. Painting, for me, is not just a technical process but an inner turmoil, a continuous dialogue between thought, emotion, and matter.

In recent years, I have been increasingly drawn to the impact of technology on human relationships, how virtual reality influences identity perception, and how people lose their authenticity in an increasingly digitalized world. These themes are reflected in my recent works, where I explore connection and disconnection, human fragility in a universe dominated by screens and illusions.

At the same time, I continue to believe that art must be a message, an emotion, a question—a way to awaken something profound and authentic in the viewer. Whether it is joy, restlessness, revelation, or mystery, an artwork must touch the soul and create an invisible yet powerful connection.

Art as a Universal Language

I firmly believe that art knows no boundaries, that it is a timeless language that unites us beyond differences in culture, religion, or tradition. Art is the energy we release into the world, the bridge between humans and the divine, the testimony of our existence beyond time.

Through my works, I aim to convey this sense of unity, awareness, and responsibility—toward ourselves, those around us, and the planet we share. The environment, nature, and the interconnectedness of all living beings are themes I have explored and consider essential. We are part of the same whole, and each of us has the duty to protect, to be aware, and to give back.

My Painting—A Reflection of My Sincerity

I do not seek to conform to an artistic trend dictated by what is “fashionable” or imposed by the art market. My art is sincere, direct, a pure expression of what I feel and think. I do not create to shock or impress but to share an energy, a vibration, a state of mind that resonates with those who view my work.

A Journey with No End

Every exhibition, every painting, every experience is a step forward in this artistic journey. With over 100 international exhibitions, curatorial projects, and diverse collaborations, and countless encounters with people and cultures, I feel that my art is in constant evolution. Yet, beyond all these achievements, the most precious role remains that of being a mother, the one that teaches me daily about love, dedication, and balance.

Today, between Romania and the United Arab Emirates, between past and future, between reality and dream, my art continues to be a bridge between worlds and souls. And my artistic journey is far from over.

“Art is love, art is energy, art is the bridge that unites us all.” Behind the Brush: A Day in My Studio and the Unseen Journey of Art

Art does not begin when the brush touches the canvas. It does not start when I choose the colors or draw the first lines. In reality, the artistic process starts much earlier, in an invisible space where thoughts, struggles, and deep searches blend and take shape.

Every day as an artist is an alchemical process. Before my hand moves across the canvas, my mind and soul travel a long path, exploring ideas, emotions, and questions. This is the true “invisible studio” where art is born—a space of introspection where reality and imagination meet, where logic and creativity merge, where the search is just as important as the final outcome.

Morning Thoughts and Inner Turmoil

My day as an artist begins with a moment of reflection. I don’t rush to touch the canvas because I know that before I can paint, I must listen. What do I want to express today? What do I feel? What inspires me? What haunts me? Sometimes, the questions are more important than the answers.

There are moments when an idea obsesses me for days, weeks, even months before it reaches the canvas. I analyze it, deconstruct it, and rethink it from every possible perspective. I look for inspiration, study shapes, colors, textures. I research symbols, the meanings behind the themes I want to explore. Sometimes, even a single shade of color carries a story worth delving into.

This stage of the artistic process is, for me, the most valuable. It is when the concept is formed, when art starts to breathe in my thoughts before becoming visible to others.

When the Hand Begins to Speak

When, finally, the brush touches the canvas, another kind of struggle begins. Now, everything I have envisioned must transform into something tangible. Between the spiritual and the material, between the pure idea and the physical gesture, there is a delicate balance.

At this stage, both hemispheres of my brain activate—the logical side, which helps me make decisions about composition, contrasts, proportions, and the creative side, which allows me to feel, improvise, and let emotions guide me. My hand becomes an instrument that translates what is inside me.

However, what many do not see is the continuous transformation of a painting. A painting is never born in a single moment. If someone could peel back the layers of a canvas, they would discover that beneath the final image, there are five, six, or even seven different versions of the same idea. Each layer is a possible painting, each version could have been the “final” one, but I always feel the need to go further, to search deeper, to add a shade, to change a form, to balance an emotion.

The Search for the Perfect Form of Expression

It is never enough to create something “beautiful.” For me, art must be more than aesthetic pleasure—it must carry a powerful message, a vibration that reaches the viewer’s soul.

This is where the greatest challenge lies: How do I convey what I feel? What is the right form? What is the color that can say everything in a single glance? Behind every artistic decision, there is a profound search.

Sometimes, I revisit my work, adjust a shadow, add light, realizing that a single line can completely change the impact of an image. Other times, I let the canvas “breathe,” allowing it to guide me toward what it needs to become. But every painting is alive, it undergoes its own transformation, its own internal struggle before stabilizing in a final form.

Art as a Bridge Between Me and Others

Regardless of where I am—in my studio in Abu Dhabi, in a remote natural setting, or in a crowded exhibition space—the artistic process remains the same. It begins with an internal struggle and ends with a message that I share with the world.

When someone looks at my work and feels something, when they resonate with the energy I have infused into the canvas, then I know I have succeeded. Art is a universal language, and each painting is a conversation I have with those who view it.

This is why, for me, the most precious moment is not the completion of a painting, but the journey to get there—the search, the discovery, the turmoil, the decision of each color, each form, each emotion that I want to imprint on the canvas. This is the work behind the brush. This is the true magic of art.

“Art is not just about what you see—it is about all the invisible versions that existed before and the emotion that remains after.”
